Wolf Rocks

Wolf Rocks Overview

Ok, so there are several Wolf Rocks in Pennsylvania.  Many of them offer good climbing and a little bouldering.  This one is the actual name as referred to the Wolf Rocks overlook along the Appalachian Trail.  When I cleaned off the problems here in the mid 90s I thought of coming up with a clever name for the area but since hikers and everyone else knows it as Wolf Rocks, I figured no one would get confused to the location and think it’s one of the other spots called Wolf Rocks in PA.

Type of Climbing

Wolf Rocks has some very short climbs that are almost always done as boulder problems because this area is a 2 mile hike to get to.  The rock is very overhanging and about 5 to 18 feet in height.  There are several great roofs here right off ground level.  The problems range from V0- to V6.  There may be a V7 as I tended to sandbag a little in the mid 90s when I climbed here.   The rock is very nice, clean, conglomerate that resembles marble in some sport where its super clean and highest quality.  The views here are amazing and its worth venturing all the way out here as a nice hike with the added bonus of a little bouldering.

Bouldering History

This area is a major vista along the AT and many hikers use this section and pass the viewpoint or use it as the end of a day hike.  A small amount of climbers have visited here but it is by no means a destination.  The approach involves a 2 mile hike to get tot he rock so I suspect this will always be an off-the-radar area deep in Pennsylvania’s woodlands.

Check an AT map as the marker on this map may be a little off.  Basically if you walk the AT from the parking lot for the AT on 191 and hike west 2 miles you will hit the vista.  Check an AT map for more accurate hiking beta.
